A disabled man who parked on double yellow lines for two minutes whilst displaying his blue badge has been left ‘fuming’ after being slapped with a parking fine. Delrich Mazarello said he was setting up his GPS to make sure he got home safely after dropping off his friend at the airport.
Delrich, 43, said after saying goodbye to his friend in the parking area he then stopped on a public road ‘for two minutes’ to set his SatNav up.
According to the government website, badge holders may park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, but in general not where there are restrictions on loading or unloading. Mr Mazarello said he had not seen a sign on the road outside the Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
He said: “I put my blue badge on the screen, then put my phone on charge and this happened within two minutes. I have my GPS already programmed to my home address.
“And then I saw a guy who started filming me. I just started my GPS as normal, removed my blue badge, and then asked him if he was filming me. And then he said it was an offence.
“At the airport, they gave me 15 minutes in the proper parking space. So I dropped off my friend and said [to myself] there is no time to put the GPS [on].
“I had my blue badge on display. So I am supposed to be on that road.”
He was issued a parking charge notice of £100 for “stopping in a zone where stopping is prohibited”. Mr Mazarello said he was ordered to pay £277 according to a notice of intended enforcement action.
He has shown proof of payment to Nottinghamshire Live. Mr Mazarello paid Direct Collection Bailiffs Ltd £277 in May this year.
Mr Mazarello, who is now on benefits, said he is disabled due to a birth defect on both his knees. “I could have set up my GPS in a moving car but I did not because it is illegal and, first of all, it is not safe. I was a bit shocked and surprised, and then I was angry and frustrated.”
