Millions of people with mobility issues rely on the Blue Badge parking permit, which allows them to park closer to their destinations. The scheme currently benefits more than 2.8 million people, granting access to free parking in certain car parks and on-street parking in restricted zones.
However, many are unaware that the Blue Badge only lasts for a few years. These permits expire after three years and do not automatically renew, writes Linda Howard.
It is crucial to apply for renewal 12 weeks (or three months) before expiration to ensure they receive a new badge before the old one becomes invalid. Continuing to use an expired Blue Badge can result in a fine of up to £1,000 for misuse.
In 2019, Blue Badge eligibility was expanded to include people with non-visible disabilities such as Parkinson’s, dementia and epilepsy. This permit allows holders to park closer to their destinations as either a driver or passenger.
However, in 2021, 698 drivers were prosecuted for misusing the Blue Badge system, with the highest number of cases in London, followed by the West Midlands and Yorkshire.
Each time a holder applies for a Blue Badge renewal, their eligibility is reassessed. Blue Badges must be reapplied for every three years, and the decision is made by the local council.
The cost of a Blue Badge is £20 in Scotland, up to £10 in England, and free in Wales. Reapplications can be made on the GOV.UK website here.
How to renew a Blue Badge online
You will need a recent digital photo showing your head and shoulders.
You’ll also need a photo or scan of your:
- proof of identity (such as a birth certificate, passport or driving licence)
- proof of address (such as a Council Tax bill or government letter)
- proof of benefits (if you get any)
You will also need to know:
- your National Insurance number (if you have one)
- the details of your current Blue Badge
- You should contact your local council if there’s a change to your:
- name
- address
- council area
- contact details

- If your badge gets damaged you must apply for a new one
- Keep your badge safe. If it is lost or stolen, you must tell the police and your local council
- Check signs to make sure that Blue Badge holders are allowed to park there
